One Fake Invoice Email Is All It Takes — Here’s What Stops It

The invoice that arrives at 4pm on a Friday

It looks right. The supplier name is familiar, the amount is plausible, and the link goes to what appears to be the company’s billing portal. Someone on your team types their credentials in, and the week ends quietly. By Monday, files across the shared drive are unreadable.

That first link in the chain is the one worth breaking, because everything after it is harder. Bitdefender’s Anti-phishing and Fraud Prevention automatically blocks known phishing sites and shows a warning page instead, so confidential information never reaches the fraudster on the other end. It extends past classic phishing to other scams too, including fake company websites built to trick people into doing business with them.

Nobody on a small team has time to inspect every URL before clicking. The protection has to sit in front of the click, not behind it — which is where this layer works.

The script that never writes a file to disk

Suppose the link gets through some other way — an attachment, a macro, a pasted command. Many attacks skip the traditional malicious file entirely and run in memory instead, which is why a plain file scan can come up clean while the attack is already underway.

Fileless Attack Protection in GravityZone Small Business Security is enabled by default. It detects and blocks fileless malware at pre-execution, terminates malicious PowerShell commands, blocks malicious traffic, analyzes memory before code injection and blocks the injection process itself. Integration with Windows AMSI adds further protection against dynamic, script-based attacks.

Alongside it, Advanced Anti-Exploit catches real-time exploits and mitigates memory corruption vulnerabilities in common applications — browsers, Microsoft Office, Adobe Reader — and safeguards system processes against breaches and hijacking. The attack is stopped before it runs, rather than cleaned up afterwards.

When it starts moving sideways across the office

An attacker who lands on one laptop rarely stays there. The next step is reaching the file server, the accounts machine, the backup drive.

Network Attack Defense checks incoming, outgoing and lateral traffic and uses multiple layers of security to protect against network-based attacks: brute force attacks, port scans, password stealers and lateral movement among them. It is a layer that stops them early and automatically, which matters when there is nobody watching a console at midnight. It is included in GravityZone Business Security, and is available for Small Business Security through the Network Attack Defense and Risk Management add-on.

The wider platform backs it up. GravityZone uses proven machine learning techniques, behavioral analysis and continuous process monitoring, and when a threat is detected it responds immediately with process termination, quarantine and rollback of malicious changes.

Encryption begins — and the files come back

The final link in the chain is the one everyone pictures: file names changing, a ransom note on the desktop. Ransomware Mitigation uses detection and remediation technologies built for that moment. GravityZone identifies abnormal encryption attempts, whether the ransomware is known or new, blocks the process, and restores files from backup copies to their original state and location.

That is the difference between a bad afternoon and a stopped business. And it isn’t a claim you have to take on trust. Bitdefender holds the most #1 placements in AV-Comparatives enterprise tests, has been recognised for Best Protection and Best Performance for business users, reached a 100% protection rate in the AV-Comparatives Business Security Test, and recorded 100% detection with the highest level of description three years in a row.

Independent testing is the closest thing a small office gets to a second opinion before buying.

What it takes to have this running by Monday

You do not need a server room or a hire. GravityZone gives you a centralized, all-in-one console with a unified view of your security, so you can track, manage and automate cybersecurity events without needing more IT resources or servers. Licensing is per device — laptops, desktops and file servers, from 1 to 100 — and the modular platform supports adding endpoints, add-ons and upgrades as needs change.

There is a free trial if you want to see it on your own machines first. Add-ons include GravityZone Web Access and Device Control as well as Network Attack Defense and Risk Management, so the package can match how your office works.

GravityZone Small Business Security is currently 30% off. Set against the cost of a Friday ransomware incident, that is a small amount of money spent before anything goes wrong rather than after.
